Do you want a color-changing neon sign, but you're unsure what to get?
This article is helpful to people who are considering buying a neon sign and are unsure of what color to get.
I compare fixed-color, RGB, or dynamic color-changing options for customers - presenting the advantages and disadvantages of each, and give some professional tips.
- Modern neon signs are made using LED neon flex. LED neon flex comes in 3 distinct types of color options - Fixed color LED neon flex, Dynamic Neon Flex, and RGB Neon Flex.
- A static, fixed, color LED neon flex is one color throughout the entire plastic tube. All LED lights within the tube are one single color. The color is visible when the sign is turned off - a red color light would be a red tube, etc.
- RGB neon flex is color-changing, but the entire tube that is used is a single color. For example, you can change the sign from red, to green. RGB neon flex tube is white when powered off.
- Dynamic neon flex is color-changing, and capable of multiple colors within the same tube. A Dynamic Neon sign can have all of the colors in the rainbow on display in different areas of the sign at the same time. Dynamic neon tube is white when turned off. Individual LED lights within the tubes can be controlled.
Let's dive in.
What are the main types of LED neon signs?
LED neon flex, acrylic neon, RGB neon, and Dynamic neon. I've compiled a comparison chart and explanations below, with images and video.
Comparison chart
Fixed Color Neon Signs
As the heading might suggest, this is a fixed color option. This color cannot be changed. e.g. if red is required, we use red LED neon flex, if blue is required, we use blue LED flex, etc.
This color option has all of the same molding and lighting capabilities that other types have. It is priced slightly cheaper than color-changing options.
Advantages:
- Colors can be fixed to match a brand or design
- Cheaper to buy and use
- Color is visible when the light is turned off
Disadvantages:
- Unable to change color, it's fixed
Example of a Fixed Color Neon Sign
This fixed color example costs between $400 and $450.
RGB Neon Signs
RGB stands for red, green, and blue. This RGB neon flex uses technology to mix these colors in varying degrees to produce the desired color. The entire color spectrum is capable in a RGB neon sign.
When a particular color is selected the entire tube is illuminated to that color. When a color is selected in RGB neon signs they change the entire sign color.
RGB neon flex tube is white when powered off and modestly priced.
Advantages:
- It can change color and can be variable depending on what is selected.
- Moderately priced
Disadvantages:
- The entire strip or sign is the color selected. You cannot have multiple colors within the same sign.
- The strip is white when turned off
Example of a RGB Neon Sign
This RGB example costs between $480 and $520.
Dynamic Neon Signs
Dynamic neon flex is another variant or LED neon lights - these are also contained inside a plastic tube. The LED lights in Dynamic Neon are more controllable - they can be independently controlled and the color changed. This allows for a far more vibrant and colorful neon sign - view the video below for an example.
Dynamic neon is more expensive and is white when turned off.
Advantages:
- Capable of being programmed to match music
- Capable of multiple colors within the same piece of LED neon flex and across the entire sign
- It can be set to change colors automatically
Disadvantages:
- The strip is white when turned off
- More expensive to buy and use
Example of a Dynamic Neon Sign
This Dynamic Neon example costs between $540 and $600.
Combination Neon Signs
Some neon signs can combine the three different types above. For example, where part of the sign is a fixed color, and another part is dynamic neon. The advantage of this might be for brands where they have a logo with very specific brand colors, but also want to bring in a dynamic color-changing element to the sign, and use dynamic neon on another part of the sign.

Conclusion
I hope that this explanation has helped customers decide between an LED neon sign with fixed color, RGB color, or Dynamic Neon.

FAQ
Can neon signs be RGB?
Yes - we have two types of RGB. We have regular RGB neon signs and we have Dynamic Neon signs. RGB signs can color change, but they are sign-wide changes in color. Dynamic neon signs are able to be controlled to the individual LED. For this reason dynamic neon signs are more vibrant, and colorful.
How do you change the color of a neon sign?
Firstly you have to make sure your neon sign is capable - you need to confirm it is RGB neon or Dynamic Neon. If it is, then your remote control should have buttons that control the light settings of the neon sign. If you bought the neon sign from us, then please reach out to our customer service team and we can provide the remote control manual for reference.
